Is there a Kelly's Directory online anywhere that covers Blaenavon, Abersychan and/or Trevethin/Penygarn for the period 1860-1900 please?
Wright - Lincolnshire; Daymond - Devon; Murray - Co Cork; East - Hereforshire; Underwood - Blaenafon/Trevethin;

there's a selection online here

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/findbylocation.asp

the 1868 one shows a Thomas Underwood in Abersychan under Braziers & Tinmen and under Nailmakers, and Thomas Underwood jnr in Blaenavon under Braziers & Tinmen

You could try libraries as well.

Osprey - thats brilliant - how do I find that entry? Im finding it hard to search in the right place.

Is that  Kellys for 1868? For which area?

This absolutely HAS to be my ancestors - Thos jnr was living in Blaenavon at the time of the 1871 census and was described as an ironmonger!

thank you so much.

and Lydart - I will try to visit the CRO on my next day off.  Thank you very much.

no, it isn't Kelly's, it's Slater's. It's in the first page of results for Wales, click on directory, search for Underwood, and carry on clicking on next hit until you get to him.

It was the only one I checked, so he might be mentioned in others.

Oh yes, I found them!!! thank you so much, I am now going to check out the other directories in the same way.

bless you, you're a star.

You wouldnt happen to know of any good publications that give pictures of the area in this time period would you? Trevethin, Abersychan and Blaenavon?

Thanks again  ;D

not off the top of my head, but you could try looking online. I've had a quick look and there appears to be a book called 'Pictorial memories of Old Abersychan'  As you're in the area, you could try libraries and bookshops.
