The Mystery of Emma & Mr CLARKE
« on: Sunday 30 August 09 16:19 BST (UK) »
This one has me puzzled but I know Rootschatters are good at puzzles.
On the 1881 census [RG11-653-F35-P9] I have Emma M CLARKE (widow) 29 b. Banbury, Oxfordshire, with her two daughters Ellen (7) and Beatrice (4) both born in Battersea (registered Wandsworth).
As she isn't a direct relation I don't really want to be buying certs, but would love to be able to fill in the name of Mr CLARKE.

I don't know if the marriage took place in the Banbury or Battersea area - or even somewhere totally different.

There is an Emma CLARKE (married, husband not present though), her maiden name would appear to be LAMPITT, on the 1871 census in Banbury [RG10-1466-F81-P41]. I am wondering if she might be the Emma I am looking for? - Thanks Tati

Hi Kia,

Your 1871 Emma has a daughter Edith age 11 mo. Searching for her in 1881, I see these 2:

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&indiv=try&h=22326249
Emma age 30 + Edith age 10, both born Banbury

Makes them less likely to be yours  :-\

Well spotted, Tati.
That rules her out.

This might be them.

Emma KIMBERLEY in 1871 was in Camberwell, aged 19 a servant born in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

FreeBMD has a marriage for an Emma Mary KIMBERLEY, Sep qtr 1874, Hackney, 1b 790b.

Grooms are William CLARK and Harry Herbert MITCHELL. No Emma MITCHELL in 1881 but there is Emma M CLARKE.

Ellen Elizabeth KIMBERLEY was born Mar qtr 1874 Wandsworth, 1d 643, makes her about 7 in 1881.

Beatrice Maria CLARKE born Jun qtr 1876, Wandsworth, 1d 626, makes her about 4 in 1881.

Hundreds of William CLARK/CLARKE deaths between 1876 and 1881 to nail him down.

FreeBMD has Emma Mary KIMBERLY born at Banbury Mar qtr 1851, who is with her parents James and Ann and family at Neithrop, Banbury, in 1861.
