I have lived near to Monmouth for 30 years, and know it well ... yet Coeur-de-Lion isn't a name I know within or near the town.

'Lionheart' ... no, can't place it !

It sounds vaguely like the name of a pub ... I've got a book about the pubs of Monmouth somewhere ... I'll have a look !

Hi Lydart,

Thanks for replying - I'm assuming Jno DAVIS farmed in Monmouth area, as this is where the trial took place on 28/6/1841 for stealing 1 sheep from him.

Do you know what the local paper would have been called at that time as the crime/trial may have been a mentioned here.

I've googled Coeur-de-Lion but it only comes up with various pubs in different areas and Richard I, Coeur de Lion (1157 - 1199).

Was the town of Caerleon ever spelt in a welsh form? and a court official took a guess at spelling it.  I see it spelt Caerllion    Caer-y-lion        Just a guess

What about another misspelling
Caer-y-Llan   I'm sure there is a Care-Llan ? this is up around Trelleck and the Narth above Monmouth.  Off to look at a map  fred

Caer Llan is about half a mile from me ... owned by a friend !!

Its a large country house, which used to be a field studies centre, but now is used for posh weddings, parties, etc.

Quite a possibility !

Hi RCB,

Caerllion, Caer-y-lion looks promising - unfortunately I don't know anything about Jno DAVIES birthdate, birthplace etc. only his name was stated for the offence of stealing 1 of his sheep.

Newspaper archives for Monmouth maybe the next step as the trial was in Monmouth, Usk on 28/6/1841.

Thanks for help & info.
