I realise that a month has passed since the last message was posted, but to complete the cycle of information, I once found a bundle of 48 pages on Ancestry for the 1891 census, which isn't that far timewise from the date seen in one of the above posts:
    Instition "Glamorgan County Asylum" -
    Civil Parish: Newcastle Higher,
    Ecclesiastical Parish: Newcastle and Coyty with Nolton
    Town: Pencoyd
    County: Glamorgan
I wonder if that is the same establishment?

I've also since found a bundle of 79 pages for 1911.
