Hi
For soldiers who served in the Second World War, service records are still held by the Ministry of Defence, and only they or, if deceased, their next of kin, can apply for them.
Finding service records for WW1 soldiers is a bit hit-and-miss, as around 60% were destroyed when an incendiary bomb hit the War Office in WW2.
Best wishes
Bill

Frederick William Rhodes.

The 156th ceased to exist after Arnhem, approx. Sept. 1944, I see his date of death was 12th April 1945 and he is buried in the Berlin war cemetery.

I think there is a strong chance he was captured at Arnhem, possibly wounded, and died in Germany as a POW.

I dont know if there are lists of troops captured, but if there are I wouldnt be surprised to see him there.

Regards

Pete

Hi pete

I will try googling and see what I can find.

i wondered if any of them had recieved medals.

I find the national archives a pig of a site to use unless you know exactly what you want.

Thanks

Hi Candis

All of the WW1 soldiers will have received medals, even posthumously, if they served in a theatre of war.

The medal index on the NA site is easy to search.

Candis,

Pte Rhodes is on the roll for arnhem, so i think my first guess will be correct - captured & then died whilst a pow. If i can I will confirm this for you.

Thanks Pete would be appreciated.

I thought you could view the medal cards on line without having to pay for them?
