Hi

Here they are on the 1841 Census

HO107/ 1118/13/ Folio 1 – 6, The Parish of West Dean, Sussex.

VERRALL Sander, 45, Ag Lab, born in Sussex
                    Jane, 40, born in Sussex
George, 12, Ag Lab, born Sussex
                    Ann, 10, born Sussex
                    Sarah, 5, born Sussex.

At the present moment, I can not locate them on the 1851 census -
Sander aged 55 is not listed - so presume deceased, there is a Jane aged 50 with a daughter Charlotte aged 20 (where did she come from); there is a George aged 23 married with a family but no Ann aged 20 or Sarah aged 15 - so can not really put the family together; only possibles as yet.

Very many thanks, thats very kind of you.

I am getting use to the census and other records not being too accurate - found my Great Grandad on mother's side had a "housekeeper" aged 2!  Later found on other side my Great Grandfather aged 32 when he had a son of 22.  When I look at actual paperwork could see it was actually 52.

The classic one was a transcribed address in Thadwete.  Naturally having spent ages searching for this Thadwete I got a copy of the census and could see after a lot of fiddling about that it wasShadwell!!

So many thanks, hope it is not taking up too much of your time, but I am very grateful.

Hi

It keeps me out of mischief, plus all the archives are here next to my computer or in the family library in the next room. - Mostly it is just a case of swinging my computer chair around or pushing it across the room.

You have to remember the 1841 census was rounded down to the nearest 5 years - so you could possibly add another 4 years to some of the ages; except children under 13 who should show their actual age.

I do not have much info before 1800, but I do visit the Record Office in Lewes on a regular basis.

Dear Chris

just to let you know I have had a bit of success on the Verralls front.

I have found Sander Verrall marrying a Jane Bonniface on 12 October 1817 in Pevensey.

I have found a Saunder Verral christened 3.8.1794 om West Dean with the father given as Edward Verral and mother Barbara.

I have also found Jane Bonnyface bprm 21/9/1798 in Pevensey and christened 4.11.98 Pevensey.

I feel sure that Saunder Verral must be Sander Verrall, dont you?

Hi Hethmar

Hey, thats great news, you are really on a roll now - it just needed a start.

I assume yo have got most of the info from on-line like the IGI or Ancestry - It looks very very positive - but would want to check it with the original registers before being 100%

Now you have her maiden name as Bonniface - there are over 40 people with that surname in the 1851 census and a lot in the 1841 census - if you identified her parents from the baptism record, will find them in the 41 and 51 census for you.

Will do the same for Edmund and Barbara Verrall

Yes, its so amazing how you get a thrill from tying these things together, isnt it!

Im sure that Saunder/Sander Verrall must be the same man, I mean  it is such an unusual name and one can see very easily how it could be transcribed incorrectly.

Jane Bonniface (Bonnyface in places) had a father called William Bonnyface and mother Elizabeth.

Sander/Saunder had Edward Verral as father and Barbara as mother.

Do you think the parents would still be around for the census?

You really get hooked on this, dont you.  I wish I had more time!!!
