Hesson family
« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 16:41 BST (UK) »
I'm trying  to locate where in Ireland my ancestors came from. James Hesson, born ~1798 married to Elizabeth Crossen (Crewson) born ~1812. Their first three children were born in Ireland; June (Jane) born ~1831, Samuel born ~1833 and Mary Ann born ~1837.

They left Ireland for Canada sometime between 1841 & 1843.

The Canadian census lists them as Presbyterians. I found a James Hesson on the 1796 flax growers list but it's just a name, no other info.

thanks

It would seem that there is someone else in pursuit of the same family
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,209779.msg1078455.html#msg1078455

Can anyone help with some advice. I am looking for ancestors of Patrick Hesson born approx 1819 in Ireland. I think possibly from Londonderry based on finding 5 Hesson's in flax growers list, one called Hugh which is the same name as Patrick's son.
I have checked www.ulsterancestry out but cannot find anything.
I realise the name could have originated from something similar but finding the same spelling in Londonderry has given me some hope.

My family moved to  Manchester before 1851 and I have tried lots of websites to no avail. can anyone suggest anything I might try or will I have to give up due to lack of records?
He arrived here with wife Rose Ann (nee Potter) and one son, William. Have not been able to confirm anything so far. The only other thing I know was Rose Ann was born in Belfast.
Any help appreciated.

Thank you both for your replies.

I will follow up on the links you posted, BallyaltikilliganG

The names listed in early posts don't appear in any of the Hesson family names I have.

I think the 1796 Flax growers list is the best best. Although they are earlier than my Hessons they could be direct ancestors as the list gives the names William, Samuel, James, Hugh & Alexander. My gg-grandfather was James Hesson and his sons' names were Samuel, James & William with Hugh & Alexander appearing as grandchildren.

With them being Protestant I suspect Desertmartin in Derry is a good place to start.

I don't know if you are still looking for your Hesson connection or not. In the last series of Who Do You Think You Are in Ireland, Dana Rosemary Scanlon was featured on it. She was also looking for Hesson ancestors. The link for that is http://www.rte.ie/tv/whodoyouthinkyouare/s1/outline_dana.html. Hope there is a connection there for you
The surnames, which I am interested in are; Maternal side: Ryan, Kevin, Grant, Grady, Gleeson, Walsh, Dwyer, Paternal side: O' Dwyer, Woodlock, Rochford & Britton - all in Tipperary; and Kelly and Hoynes in Laois.

Ryan, Campbell, Luttrell, Grant, Grahame, Bainbridge and Brown in Queensland, Australia

Tighe in Victoria, Australia.

Grant in Philadelphia, Sullivan and Penny in New York; and Britton in Connecticut

You should include the spelling HASSON in your searches as I've come across this name in Co Londonderry pronounced very close to "Hesson".

Good luck with your search.
