To continue with my 'blind search' lol  ;D

I have now have a name ....... Gilbert Grant b.22.03.1901 Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire.

I found him on the above link that gave the following information

Name as above
date and place of birth as above
Service No : VX86156  possibly in the navy?
Place of enlistment : Victoria
Next of Kin : Ila
Location Canberra

Anyone able to help me find further details of Gilbert?

Polly

OK a suggestion for you now lol.

Now you have a name and date of birth, why dont you have a look at the 1901 & 1911 cencus's and see how close the two families lived together?

I found my gt-grandad & his family this way:
My gt-grandad was - as far as anyone knew - called Henry Childs and Born in Walsingham Norfolk in 1875.
Well ........... 20 years on from starting I had traced every Henry Childs born in 1875 in the area, looked at their families & marriages & non were him, so I had just about given up on finding him.

Then by sheer chance I mentioned to someone in the chat room that he didnt exist before 1901 ...............

We found a Henry Hanwell Childs born illigitimate close by in 1867, in a different district, by following him & his mum 'forward' thru the cencus's (and a few different surnames thanks to his mum!) we finaly figured out this was "my" Henry.
Once I was happy with it being the right one, I had a look around the general area in the cencus's for the times he would have been born and Lo & behold, there on the next page to gt-gt-granny was a Henry Hanwell, the same age as gt-gt-granny, single & the right occupation to what Henry had said on his Marriage cert in 1910.

My theory is that Henry didnt KNOW when he was born, or that he was illigitimate and the info he gave was the info his mother had given him growing up, and obviously for her own reasons she didnt want him telling people he had no father.

Hope this helps,

Gaille

I'm impressed Gaille .... gobsmacked even ....... after searching for 20years and then you find him, that is truly amazing.  Guess that must have been quiet a moment for you - Eureka!!
...... In my Aunt's case I think the father of her child lived in the same street (others in my family are certain of this) There was a family by the name of Grant living in Mill Road, Cleethorpes on 1901 census but the problem is he was born after the 1901 census and at this moment in time I don't have any spare cash for credits to view the 1911 census which is a bit of a bummer.  Said absent father was packed off to Aus 1918/1919 ....... so I'm hoping that the info retrieved by Johngirl and Jenn will enable me to establish when this Gilbert Grant went on his journey to Australia.

Encouraged by your post Gaille I will keeeeep searching!

If that d.o.b. for Gilbert of 22.03.1901 is right, he was born before census night - which was 31.03.1901.   He might have been too young to have been given a name yet - but he should be there.

The family of Elvidge (Ancestry have him as Elridge) and Charlotte Grant, living in Mill Road, Cleethorpes in 1901 appears to include a Gilbert aged 10 in 1911. (Using the other members of household search).

A birth of Gilbert Grant was registered in Grimsby district (includes Cleethorpes) in June Q 1901.

It is odd that there is no new baby in the Grant household in 1901 - perhaps the d.o.b. is a month or two out?

Hi Galium ......... apologies for not responding sooner OH using laptop .......... goodness where to begin ....

If that d.o.b. for Gilbert of 22.03.1901 is right, he was born before census night - which was 31.03.1901. He might have been too young to have been given a name yet - but he should be there.

Your quiet right ... all I was seeing was June Q 1901 and if that 22 March date is right he should be there, I've searched thro Mill Road 1901C 3 times, counted 4 Grant families - NO GILBERT!  but just maybe that date 22 Mar 1901 that I've taken from his army details has been mistranscribed somewhere and should read 22 May making the June Q correct.  I'm really bowled over that you have looked at 1911 census Galium - I've spent my budget but had looked at my grandparents living at No. 101 with my mother and sister Dorothy and note that the Grants were at 105 when I checked the enumerators book.  Interestingly searching on Elvidge Grant I noticed that his father was Robert Gardner Grant - JOHNGIRL, on a PM has sent me a link that lists Gilbert as Gilbert GARDINER Grant - coincidence or what?!  ...... me thinks your recky on the 1911C has found my Gilbert ........ I think I'm going to BUST or cry.

So thank you folks for your help, thank you  so very much, perhaps we're going in the right direction!

Wow again,

I think we may be onto something here ;D
Surely couldn`t be just coincidence could it.Pity that he may have already passed on but I suppose it would be wishful thinking that he was still living at aged 108 ;D Sorry Polly for thinking he would be still alive. :-[ It was late when I was looking about and forgot that he was born in 1901 ::)
Will keep checking back to see how this develops.
I`m sure someone could search the Electorial Rolls for Gilbert and Ila.
