John Ross, Mason, Aberdeen 1744
« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 19:12 BST (UK) »
Would anyone have any ideas of what records might exist for masons (stone, bricklayers) working in Aberdeen during the middle of the 18th century? I am looking for references to my ancestor, John Ross (b. bef 1724?) who according to baptismal records of his son, John, was working as a mason in 1744. The mother of this child was a Barbra Pirie.

Thank you,

Inez

Hi Inez

There will be some records existing i am sure as the official professional body as it existed in those times (The Incorporation of Mason Artificers ?) has since become what is recognised as the Lodge of Masons (freemasons). They are very good at keeping records, and as Aberdeen only officially obtained it's charter in 1743 it seems likely that any mason of the time would have been a member.

If you contact the owners of this website they may be able to give you more information.

Hope this helps

I realize this was an older post but I am looking for a few different John Ross that lived in Aberdeenshire around 1744, a father of Andrew Ross, John, Christian, Sarah and Elizabeth. By any chance would this be the same John?
