Hi Graham and welcome to RootsChat

I can't find it either!  Where did this come from?  Could it be a transcription error?

If you have an image of the writing you could put it on the

Deciphering & Recognition Help board

for another opinion

Linda

Added - There's a Hanwell, Middlesex.  I wonder if it was mis-heard?
MOXHAM/MOXAM - Wiltshire & Surrey
SKEATS - Surrey
BRETT - Kent & County Durham
and
SWINBANK - anywhere

G'day Linda,
A member of the Jones (my wifes side) clan has done a history of the family and this is one of the first facts she has , and as shes 90 I dont want to tell her I think she is mistaken some where along the line, and as she lives 4-500 K's from me I haven't the time to go and look at what proof she has!!
Thanks for taking the time to look and reply

12th Foot - Suffolk Regiment - now Royal Anglian Regiment (in Afghanistan)
They were certainly in New Zealand 1863 to 1866 in the Maori War so they were probably in Australia before then as the forces used in New Zealand were drawn from those in Australia.

Hi Graham

The places you have match the location of the 1st Battalion of the 12th Foot. They left Cork in 1854. If your information regarding dates and places differs from what your relative says you need to post what you have. They had a second battalion for part of the time you give.  If your relative has a copy of his service record that should just say ‘Home’ rather than Ireland, so I think more than one source is involved.

The standard period of enlistment was 12 years, so he could have taken his discharge c1864 anyway if your dates are correct.

Findmypast are putting surviving pre-WW1 records online by 2011. You could also check their overseas/regimental BMDs. The regiment will be in the index. You may however have to use a researcher to search the muster books in Kew. These will say where he was on the first day of the month. His first and last entry may give more information such as age and occupation on enlistment and place of birth. However virtually no FH information was recorded in military records in this period, other than the regimental BMDs already mentioned.
