Thomas Benjamin Hulley 1860
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 11:21 BST (UK) »
Thomas Benjamin Hulley born 1860.  Thomas was educated in Smithfiled Orange Free State, South Africa.

When he left school he worked for a time in Cawood' store until the outbreak of the Basuto War 1880 - 81 when he joined up (Medal and Clasp).

Looking for any information on this to do with Thomas Hulley.

Thanks
Candis

Hi Candis

He was a Private in Cradock Burghers. As a local unit - Basutoland was under the control of the Cape Colony at the time, which was partly a reason it started - any records will be in the Capetown Archives rather than in Kew. Although casualties were reported in the London Gazette.

Here are details of the medal - http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/cape_good_hope.htm. They were lucky to get it as most people consider it a losing draw. Some sites confuse it with the South Africa Medal 1877 -1879.

The war of 1880-181 is also known as the Gun War.
