Yes, Doris was the daughter of "Alan".  His original name was John Deakin.  I'm starting to wonder if Ada was also previously married -- to someone named Dukesell?  On her first son's birth certificate, she lists her maiden name as Ada Harrison Dukesell.  So many questions!!!!!!!!

Did Ada use the same name on the other children’s birth certificates?

What was put on her death certificate?

If I have identified him correctly, (and I may not have). John Deakin’s mother was Lucy, so as they had a daughter Lucy, did they name any of the other children after family?

Going back to the 1901 census, looking at the image I think Alan is actually aged 30, not 50, which makes more sense!

I'm showing "Alan's" birth year as 1873.  aka John Deakin   So that is interesting that you find a John Deakin whose mother was Lucy.

Mckha489 What have you learned about John Deakin?  Anything about his wife?

There seems to be a Sarah who was a sister to Ada's father Joseph.  She was born about 1850 +/-  I guess her maiden name would have been Harrison.  I wonder if she married a Dukesell?  She would have been Ada's aunt -- and that fits with her stories.

this is assuming that Dorothea/Dorothy/Doris 's christian name was not also changed  :)

There are no Dorothea Deacon or Deakin births registered first qtr of 1897 (see earlier reply saying her birth was Feb 1897)
There are only a few Deacon or Deakin births registered.

The only one that seems to fit by location, and by fact I cannot see her with family post 1901 is the

DEAKIN Dorothy Leonard  1897 M Qtr, Aston Vol 06D page 297  Mother's maiden name (from GRO register) is BOLTON

looking for a John DEAKIN  m BOLTON

there is just on same page -  John DEAKIN  and Emma Heaton BOLTON June qtr 1895, Birmingham 6d 332

Emma H BOLTON is with her mother and family in 1901,  listed as married, no children with her. And there are no other Deakin Bolton births.  So seems a likely candidate.

in 1891
there is a family at 5 Jessamine Place, Anderton Street

Lucy E DEAKIN 40 widow, warehouse woman b Birmingham
John 19 a carpenter
Samuel E A 10 a scholar
William H 5 scholar      all b Birmingham

there is a tree on Ancestry for Samuel E A DEAKIN which has a lot of information about him but none at all about John which would fit with him disappearing from the family, (Although the same tree has William H DEAKIN marrying someone before he was born so.....)

1881

John DEAKIN 33 marr Jewell Case Maker (leather) b Staffordshire. Bescot.
Lucy Elizth 30 b Aston Warwickshire
John 9 b Aston
a 5 day old son b Aston

marriage 30 May 1870

John DEAKIN 23 Jewell Case Maker son of John DEAKIN Awl Blade maker
Lucy Elizabeth GRIFFIN 23  dau of Isaac GRIFFIN a Brass Caster

witnesses Lucetta DEAKIN (her mark) and Isaac GRIFFIN

How do you know Ada's father was Joseph?
was he Joseph HARRISON?

added - there are no D*k*s*ll / Harrison mariages showing in the FreeBMD between 1837 and 1900
nor with one L

Added -  I see you actually know she was Ada HARRISON because of her letter to the Mayor and the matching birth certificate.  Daughter of Joseph HARRISON Engine Fitter and Ann Maria STRINGER
