After having searched some more, I managed to find the marriage record, stating that they were both of the parish, but I found no record for a birth of either of them

Then, I found Philip's burial record from 1834, stating his place of residence as Cockington and his age as 58, putting his birth around 1776

As of yet, I have found no record for his birth in Torquay, Cockington, Paignton, Marldon, St Marychurch or Ipplepen (his son married there, so I checked for a connection)

It seems the most likely candidate is a Philip Madge born in Meeth, Okehampton. There is a very high concentration of Madge's around there, and its currently the only matching date

Hi

There was previously a large database of Madge's online which can still be accessed through the Wayback Machine http://web.archive.org/web/20050407223139/www.madgefamily.net/index.htm

I hope this is some help to you.

Regards

Colin

A Philip MADGE was baptised in Paignton 26 Dec 1780, son of Walter & Elizabeth.
He is still alive in 1851 at the HURRELL household in Tormoham, shown as MUDGE.

This Philip Madge, son of Walter Madge and Elizabeth Lane, was married to Grace Smith (Smeeth).

The Hurrell household he was at in the 1851 Census was that of his daughter, Grace Madge Hurrell, who was my 2 x great grandmother. "Mudge" is a transcription error.

The wider Madge family is indeed extensive across Devon.

Hi,
The Philip Madge that is being referred to as being the spouse of Dorothy Shout and buried in 1834, is related to me and I have been trying for sometime to find his Father and Mother, with no success, so I just wondered if anyone had managed to trace his ancestors.

I would appreciate any information that can help me, in this regard.
