Jeremiah Buckland in 1841 Census COMPLETED
« on: Monday 07 September 09 06:51 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for Jeremiah Buckland, who was living in or around London in the 1840's. He was born in Burnham, Bucks in about 1807. His wife was Ann, born in Lydentone, Norfolk in about 1815 and his children then, would probably have been Elizabeth and William.

Thanks

1841 isn't very  forthcoming on birthplace.

What leads you to place him in the London area 1840's?
When & where were his kids born?
Whta occupation did he have?

I've found him in all the census returns except those for 1841.

So you should be able to tell us some more info AND tell us in which parish of London his 1836 marriage was

Thanks for the reply. The information I have on Jeremiah Buckland is this:

1851 Census: St Mary Newington, St Peter, Walworth, Lambeth, Surrey
Jeremiah Buckland.  44. Burnham, Bucks. Occupation Victualler
Ann Buckland 36. Lydentone, Norfolk. Wife
William 13. City of London, Middlesex
Elizabeth 17. City of London, Middlesex
Charles 5. Walworth, Surrey
Emma 3. Walworth, Surrey
Thomas Jas 2 months. Walworth, Surrey

1861 Census: St Mary, Newington, Lambeth
Jeremiah Buckland 52. Burnham, Bucks. Occupation: Publican
Ann Buckland 36. Lydentone, Norfolk. Wife
George William 23. London City
Elizabeth Ann 31. London City
Charles Ed 15. Newington, Surrey
Emma Alice 13. Newington, Surrey
Thomas James 10. Newington, Surrey
Frederick Albert 8. Newington, Surrey
Adelaide Ellen 5. Newington, Surrey
Harry A E 5 months. Newington, Surrey

1871 Census: Peckham, Surrey
Jeremiah Buckland 64. Buckinghamshire. Occupation: Laundryman
Ann  56. Norfolk
Thomas  21. Newington
Ada 15. Newington

In 1881 he is 6 feet under, having died in Croydon in 1875.

I have been looking for him in the 1841 Census, hoping it would shed some light on who his parents were, and when he was born or baptised.

Hi Skull

The 1841 contains limited iformation compared to the subsequent censuses.

Ages for those over 15 were rounded down, if you do find him don't be surprised if the age looks wrong compared to later entries)

Relationships aren't listed.

In your case, the nearest you get to place of birth is 'of the county' to which the reply is Yes or No. But he is consistent with his place of birth being Burnham.

I would imagine that at best you will find Jeremiah, Ann, Elizabeth and William (and any other children who sadly didn't grow to adulthood)

I've looked and looked but I can't spot them in the 1841 census, but Jeremiah does turn up in both the 1848 and 1851 Post Office directories:

Jeremiah George Buckland - Hen & Chickens P.H, Hen & Chicken Lane, Walworth Common

Also I had a quick look at the census images and I think daughter Elizabeth's age has been mistranscibed twice, in 1851 the image looks like she is 11, and in 1861 it looks like she is 21 - so could this be her birth entry?:

Births: Dec 1839 - Elizabeth Ann Buckland
District: London
Vol 2 Page 141

This would give you an address for the family just before the 1841 census, might help you to track them down!

Hope this helps a little bit,
millerina  :)

Thanks very much to you all.

I shall investigate 'The Hen and Chicken' PH lead, and start looking at surrounding counties for Jeremiah's whereabouts in 1841.

Thanks for the link to the dead pubs website - I didn't know that existed!

How do I go about finding Jeremiah's address in 1939, using Elizabeth Ann's birth details?

As Walworth and Newington were once in Surrey, is it worth posting a request looking for Jeremiah's name in the 1841 Census, on the Surrey page of Rootschat?

Use the enumeration district description to locate the street.

No; It's already been searched.
