« on: Monday 07 September 09 18:31 BST (UK) »
Help please - Could anyone tell me how I could find information about someone emigrating from Germany to South Africa, probably in the early 1900s.

Many thanks

Hi there,
Passenger lists that relate to emigrants from Germany to various different countries are available. Sometimes they went via England.
maybe someone can help you with those.

Hi Ouma and Ruth

Thank you for replying....

The person I am looking for is a Conrad J Friedemann, born (probably!!) in Germany in 1886 and died (probably ::))in South Africa, but I don't know when........

I know this is all a bit vague, but it is my maternal second cousin's mother's family and this is all she knows.

Conrad married Florella Anderton and their daughter, Marie Beatrice (above cousin's mother) was born 18 September 1905in Pietermaritzburg Natal S.Africa.  So I suppose they married in abt 1904, in South Africa. (I am trying to be logical ???)

I have found Florella's emigration in 1903 on Findmypast, but can't find Conrad (I did try via England, but nothing came up). Florella died in 1934 in Durban.

I have no information about Conrad's place of birth in Germany or his parents, but I have found a few websites and am working on it!

If you could help me on my way, I would be very grateful!

Many thanks

Tilly

Back again -----

Since writing last post, have just found the following in the National Archives at Pietermaritzburg:

FRIEDEMANN, JOHANN KARL. (S/S FLORELLA, BORN ANDERTON) REMARRIED JOHNSON: ALBERT LLOYD.  The date is 1916 (REFERENCE 230/1916)

Does this mean that Johann is the son of Florella and that she has remarried Albert Johnson - so Conrad is dead? Or is Conrad really Johann?

and this

JOHNSON, ALBERT LLOYD. BORN IN PIETERMARITZBURG. SURVIVING SPOUSE  JOHNSON, AMY ALICE. (BORN MCCARTHY). PREDECEASED SPOUSE JOHNSON, FLORELLA. (FORMERLY FRIEDEMANN, BORN ANDERTON). ESTATE NO. 16856/1931. PREDECEASED SPOUSE JOHNSON, ALICE MARTHA. (BORN LAING).    ESTATE NO. 925/1959. DECEASED ESTATE
REFERENCE 976/1974

And now Florella is dead and Albert has remarried first to Alice Martha and then to Amy Alice?  But why is the date 1974?

Goodness - I think I need some fresh air!!  ???

I would be VERY grateful for your advice.

Many thanks.

Tilly

Hi Tilly,
I think your Conrad is probably Johann Karl as the first transcription is his death notice sating that Florella was the surviving Spouse( S/S)

Albert married first to Alice, then Florella who died in 1931 and finally Amy. I think he died 1959 and amy probably died in 1974 and the estate finalised at that time.

It would be good to order the estate files from the Archives and this should give births and parents etc.

Hello Ruth

Thank you very much for the reply.

I have a couple of questions please :

Could you tell me how you worked out the "marrying order" for Alice and Florella?

My second-cousin's brother still lives in South Africa - he lives in a place called KLOOF...... Is Kloof near enough to the Archives for him to go and have a look? I suppose he would have to go to Pietermaritzburg?

If he can't go, I shall order the estate files as you suggest.

thank you again for all your help
