Presumably you have an address where he died in 1954?

Personally I'd email Herts Record Office and ask if they'd be so kind as to look up the electoral roll(or Kelly's directory) for around that date and give you her christian name.

Thank you all for your responses and the trouble that you have taken.  I was given to understand that the marriage was in England but I think this information must be incorrect.  No marriage ScotlandsPeople up to 1933 (cannot  access post 1933 online) but will ask a contact to visit New Register House.  Will take up the suggestion of email contact 'hertsdirect'

Could he have used Whitelaw as a surname at times?  I presume he's the Alexander White... SPEARS born at Peebles in 1904 listed on Scotlandspeople.

m. JunQ 1923, Alexander WHITELAW & Martha PATTERSON, South Shields RD, 10a, 1381

A red herring?

m. DecQ 1944, Alexander W. SPEAR, Tynemouth RD, 10b, 416, spouse Lucy Towns.

Thank you RichardK. Yes, he was born in Peebles 1904.  No marriage record Scotlandspeople.  I am hoping to able to find someone to check the electoral roll for Watford to establish at least the widow's first name.  Whitelaw?  Who knows?
