Canadian WW2 Uniform/Service No
« on: Friday 11 September 09 11:00 BST (UK) »
What can I find out from a name and a service number, or is there only limited information available?

Pte Ronald Wallace Chambers H20964.

And is there anywhere I can identify what the uniform would be like? As i have a picture and I am unsure if it is him. (I have not scanned it in yet as I was only given it yesterday)

Thanks

Tracey

Tracey

his rank of Private and the letter prefix 'H' indicate that he was not an airman but a soldier.

The H implies that he was part of one of the units from the Manitoba and Western Ontario.

If someone has a copy of Regimental Numbers of the Canadian Army by C M Law then they can tell you which unit he enlisted in as the number blocks I have are incomplete.

Interesting, I was told he was an airman  ;D Just shows you can't trust family stories!
Now that I think about it, the uniform does look more army like (i.e. like my Grandads) so would make sense!

Thanks for the link.I'm off to look now!

Here is a link to the wedding photo with the uniform. Can anyone identify it, or even the sailor?

Looking at the service number again there are some casualties whose numbers are very close to his - and all were in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. However, the cap badge in the photo doesn't fit the one for the regiment so either he transferred to another unit or it is not a picture of him.

It maybe worth contacting the regiment association:

Thanks kyt,

I have sent a message, fingers crossed its the right regiment. Or that they could confirm one way or the other.

But I have a confession to make, I got Ronald's middle name wrong, its Wallace (not William  ooops!! ::) ) I've edited it to be correct.

Thanks kyt, the link was very very useful. Ronald was a member of the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. (from his service number) Enlisted 11/1941.  ;D

I now also have a reference to the Royal Canadian Regiment. Would the uniform tie in with this regiment? I'm hoping it does as it would infer he was transferred sometime before 1945.

Cheers

Hi This thread is about my grandfather! we have all his army papers and decorations still. If you have any other information about him that would be awesome!

Thanks!
