Try find them in later census may have county in ireland they are from.

Also depending on which country your ancestor was in their death cert may have their parents names.

Also marriage records depending on country again may have good information.

Also often people had cousins or siblings in the same area.

Maybe Obituary would help if available.

Once you have exhausted all these you may be able to track them in Ireland.

Try a search here

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

put in surname only and ireland plus date range.

After that reduce returns by the various selections at the top eg first name, event etc
Garton - Hull, Welton, Brough, Elloughton, Beverley, Polruan, Massachusetts
Measham - Whitwood, Pontefract; Derby, Ripton
Hookham - Glanford Brigg, Appleby
Vaughan - Portadown
Scott - Belfast
Fetherstonhaugh - Belfast
Allen - Belfast
Cooke - Portadown

As they are abroad (outside Ireland) by 1851 the pilot site would not be much help as registration of births, deaths and marriages only started from 1864 onwards. And some protestant marriages were recorded from mid 1840's.

Your best bet is to concentrate on 1861, 1871 census etc. and any death records, marriages and other family hints in the area they lived in abroad (outside Ireland).
Later Census are often good for given more information on county of origin within Ireland sometimes even given the town.
