Hi Chick Chick  I am descended from the Ackerman family too but from Henry's sister Jane who married a John Powell Thomas Grant Webb and they moved to NZ with their family prior to Henry.  Apparently he wasn't very happy with his sister Jane, accusing her of getting him out under false pretenses and owing him money.  According to Papers Past site there was a barney when  he appeared at Jane's home threatening to do for her etc.  However the younger generation didn't carry it on as my grandmother moved with her husband  to the Carterton area and obviously had contact with children attending the same school.  My grandmother was left out of her mother's will no doubt for "consorting with the enemy"  You can see the story on Papers Past site.  I have a photo of Henry obviously somewhat older and a family group which with a large cake in front I presume was a special celebration.  I don't know the names of the people in the photo and would be pleased to know who is who.  I  wonder if the amongst the photos sent to the Museum there would be one of Jane prior to the dispute.
My mother is the youngest of the family but did get to school in that area briefly.  Any Ackerman family info would be greatly appreciated.  I had advertised for Ackerman family in a magazine but had no response, also wrote a number of letters with the same results so am pleased to see your message on my site.  BELLBIRD

Hi folk looking for Ackermans in NZ  I have been off line for what seems an eternity, probably is.  It is thanks to the Earthquakes here in Christchurch.  The computer refused to work after being thrown on the ground and bounced around at least 4 times.  Hence i haven't been looking at Family Tree or anything else.  Henry Ackerman the first male of this branch in NZ is my Uncle with I think two greats, the brain doesn't function as well currently his sister is my great grandmother.  I have a family group photo of Henry celebrating something as there is a big cake? in the front as well as one of him amongst all the papers that the quakes have refiled for me amongst every other paper I have which are still being resorted.  If you look back through my messages you will should find reference to a lady in Carterton? area who has done research for me on Henry and his immediate family.  Bellbird

Hi bellbird and Althea,
This is my 1st post on this forum and came across your posts while trying to kill off some of the distant relatives, I am related on a line back to a Lawrence Akerman sic b 1746 in Bridport, Dorset, England. His brother John Akerman sic is a direct ancestor of both your lines I believe. Have you researched this far back to confirm this?
Regards Paul.

I don't think so Paul, unfortunately i have lost so many of my records through damage and spread paint done by the big earthquakes and following aftershocks,  I see this morning we are well over 10,500.  Been a few days since the last 4 magnitude.  Also all that was on my computer was lost thanks to it being thrown on the floor and bounced around at least 4 times. Christchurch is certainly not the city we knew, we used to be so shocked at the empty spaces where buildings have been demolished, now mainly oh its just another one.  I'm still finding it hard to concentrate and exhaustion on bad days good days still very tired so haven't done much, but have been contacted by a cousin in here in NZ. Anyway  I had been given a list (now lost through my art paints  soaking it and sticking it together) going back to 1600s which was interesting.  The two Ackermans connected to me are Henry, my  great Uncle and his sister Jane my great grand mother.  They were born in Burton Bradstock when their father had for some reason been asked to leave  Bridport, they did return to live there, marry and come out here with families.  Henry was not pleased with life here and turned up on Jane's doorstep when husband was crossing the Hutt River in a dingy, threatening to do for her, burn her house down etc.  Read the court case on a site Papers Past.  There were at least one other lot of Ackermans I think as a court case was in the papers  in which a Susan Ackerman appeared, but age meant it wasn't our Susan Ackerma. I think.  I hear sounds of breakfast being made so must eat and hopefully feel a little more awake.   Bellbird.

:) Hello Bellbird. Thanks for your pm. As I understand, being new to this site, I cannot send pm's until I have done 3 or more posts.
Yes I am a descendant of Halfyard / Ackerman and Chic Chic is my sister. So, our paternal grandmother was Vera HALFYARD; her parents being Henry and Elizabeth Susan (nee. Ackerman). Elizabeth's parents were Henry Jolliffe and Susan Elizabeth (nee.Taylor) Ackerman.
One of the Ackerman's homes, a small cottage, still exists and has some acreage with it I believe; located on SH2. just north of Carterton in Clareville. A property once occupied by Henry Halfyard and family in Masterton, located at 23 Albert Street, still exists also and is a residential home.
There is a Thompson family tie to Ackerman's here in the Wairarapa, which I haven't looked into the "how" as yet. I just recall my late father mentioning Clive Thompson being a cousin and Clive's sister (her name I can't recall) mentioning to me about them being descended from Ackerman's. This was some time ago, well before I started a nosing into my family history. You have to bear with me, my research is very much in its infancy and a lot of what I have has been gleaned via others and the internet. I have all good intentions of visiting our local archives but there seems to be always other domestic matters requiring attention first.
I can only sympathise with your plight in Christchurch. A few jolts we could get over, but to have the number & magnitude that you have had to endure and still do, is just so hard to imagine and comprehend. I wish you all a speedy recovery from this mayhem.
I may have some info that might help you. I have photos of people, unfortunately unlabelled, but there may be images of Ackerman's amongst them???
All the best, Kind regards, zephyr64
