Thanks for you helpful response.

It must be Garth near St. Margaret's Hope, though the 1871 census entry I have had it as Gairth. Nearby Berriedale and Grimness have appeared on other documents I have.

It is probably meant to be Garth, quite often in Orkney the word Garth is pronounced Gairt. There is a place called Garth near the farm of Berriedale
Dumfriesshire: Bell, Kerr, Dickson, Hetherington
Orkney: Cursiter, Peace, Drever, Cooper, Paterson, Brock, Leslie, Malcomson, Miller, Scott
Cumberland: Charlton, Young

I believe my Grandmother, Elizabeth Burgess, lived in Gairth (Garth). She was born in 1868 and is shown as living there in 1870.
