lookup request... robert swinney b. 1842**completed** thanks to all
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 14:10 BST (UK) »
could any one help with the following lookup request in the 1851,61,71 census

i have found robert in the 1881 census living in bishopwearmouth along with his family.

robert (b.1842) is the head of the household married to his wife ellen (b.1845)

i believe robert is from the berwick upon tweed area, but born on the north side of the river, this could be the reason he is classed as scottish. any help would be gratefully recievd

thank you for your prompt reply rosie,

rersearching the swinneys is very confusing for me, as you can see in the 1871 census it states that robert & ellen where born in berwick, which is in england and there son george born in newcastle which is in england too.

in the 1881 census it states they were both born in scotland along with there son george but no place name given

i think i may have found there marriage in newcastle in 1863 but will need to follow this up further,

thank you

Hi

I can't see him in 1861 - perhaps that marriage certificate is the answer.  Do you know Ellens maiden name?

Hi both,

There is a candidate on earlier censuses, born in Spittal Northumberland (in Berwick district):

1861
RG9/3888 8 10
Middle Street, Spittal

Robert Swinney, lodger, 19, Iron moulder, b. Spittal

lodging with a Sweaton family.

1851
HO107/2421 246 6
Tweedmouth, Northumberland
Spittal

Jane Swinney, head, 32, Charwoman, b. Spittal
William, son, 11, b. do.
Robert, son, 9, scholar, b. do.
John, son, 7, scholar, b. Lancashire Liverpool
George, son, 5, scholar, b. do.

The Liverpool bit is interesting because Robert gives his birth place as Liverpool in 1891.

hi rosie99

ellens maiden name was tait as far as i can gather,

another thing i have noticed from the census info is
1841 Tweedmouth / spittal come under durham
1851 onwards they seem to come under northumberland

berwick became a part of england (northumberland) in 1482. being previously the county town of berwickshire in scotland.

Norham & islandshire came under the jurisdiction of the county of durham.

from all this confusion i am aware that i have to search within berwickshire (scotland) northumberland, Durham and  the norham & islandshire districts (england)
so when it comes up not born in county as it does in 1841 does it mean not born in durham, but could be northumberland or  possibly berwickshire.

regards one very confused
