Harriet Turley born about 1826 in Leintwardine
« on: Thursday 17 September 09 11:47 BST (UK) »
Harriet Turley was born in Leintwardine in about 1826. She married William Oakley in 1846 in Broseley, Shropshire. At the time, she was a miller. Her father, just shown as Turley, was also a miller.

Is there an 1841 census available for Leintwardine shat would show Harriet Turley's parants and possible siblings?

Harriet doesn't show in 1841, but there are only about 10 Turleys in Herefordshire and 8 are in Lientwardine including
Parish of Burrington
William Turley age 40, miller  Y = born in county
Ann Turley age 40
William Turley age 10
*Harriet would be about 15 and will be in service somewhere

Lientwardine
Thomas Turley age 29, musician Y
Ann Turley age 25
Elizabeth 3
Sarah 3 months

Lientwardine
also George Turley 40 indepenent, Y
Mary Overton 40
George Overton 16
Mary Overton 12
James Overton 7
Herbert Overton 4

There are other Overtons nearby

Thank you Fred. That's exactly the information I was looking for. So Harriet Turley's parents were William Turley and Ann. They were both born about 1801 in Herefordshire and would have married about 1825. William probably had at least one brother Thomas who was a musician. Bingo - the Romany gypsy connection I was after.

Do William and Ann Turley show up in or around Burrington in the 1851 census?

No William and Ann around in 1851?  son William might be working as a servant in Knighton.
In Leintwardine
Swan Street
Thomas 49 musician and gardener born Burrington
Ann 47, William 24, George 17, Henry 11, Thomas 8
Catherine 5, Alfred 1

Nearby Lodger George Turley 61, miller, born Ashford Salop.
there must be a link between these Turley's
also servant - John Turley 15, stable and garden boy

also Preston on wye
James Turley 39 carpenter, wife Priscilla and 3 children, eldest son James 15 is with his grandparents name Baker.

No idea where William and Ann went, people did get missed, and names got spelt wrong.  Did you look at the Hugh Wallis site, Burrington and Ashford Carbonell (Salop)

We have this weekend discovered a very early photograph of Harriet Turley. She looks a fine lady and not at all like a Romany gypsy fruit picker. In fact, the family member who sent the photograph says that she thinks Harriet came from Leintwardine Hall! I don't know yet whether this hall still exists and if there is any records of the Turley family there.

On her marriage certificate, Harriet's father was a miller, but his first name is not shown. I looked at the 1841 census again and the following are probably Harriet's parents:

May Mill, Burrington, Herefordshire:
  - William Turley, 35, miller, NOT born in county
  - Ann Turley, 35, NOT born in county
  - William Turley, 10, born in county

Harriet would have been about 15 in 1841 and had already left home. The Harriet in the photograph would have been in the her 40s or 50s - it looks like she came a long way since her 'miller' beginnings. She had formed a business in Broseley with her husband William Oakley.
