Rhodes to "South" Africa ?

HELP

I have a relative who disappeared between 1901 and 1911.

Edwin Rhodes (Albert Edwin Rhodes) born 8/2/1873 in Leeds

Married Florence Anne Benn in  10/9/1894

Worked as an Engine Cleaner/Locomotive Stoker on the railways

Known as "Ned"

Known to have gone awol, without his family never to be seen again, to work on the railways in Africa

HELP

The only reference I can find is a passenger record in 1899 for an A E Rhodes b 1874 travelling with wife Mrs F aged 22. No other details are available.

Thanks, apart from age of wife, who was slightly older by 1899, it all fits.

Both were still/back in England in 1901 (census), with Florence being pregnant at this time.

By 1911 only Florence and chikdren remained, with no sign of a death for Abert Edwin.

Still confused, maybe they came back, but he decided to return to Africa ?
