Hi  :)

A bit about it here (11 pages) :

http://history.powys.org.uk/history/llani/flan1.html

I've got some books which discuss it in more detail but they're in Scotland  :-\

Thanks Gadget, thats all very interesting , quite an important industry.

My interest really is to find John Mason, born c 1817 Trefeglwys.
By Dec 1841 he marries in Wrexham and in 1851 is  Living in West Derby,
I think it says Trefeglwys  ???
HO107; Piece: 2192; Folio: 455; Page: 24

I spotted Mason in Directories as Flannel weavers
1829 Pigots
Llanidloes John Mason, China Street, Flannel manufacturer
1844 Pigots. Llanidloes, No Masons
Slaters 1859 Llanidloes. No Masons.

and there is a link with Trefeglwys  that I found .
Powys FHS publication, I suppose this is the issue number 14, and pages 2-3
flannel manufacturers (see 'weavers'weavers
Trefeglwys, MGY (14 : 2-3)   Issue 14 , Summer 1986

Looks like Trefeglwys to me.

Do you have his father's name from the marriage cert. I did look for a baptism yesterday when you put up the other thread but couldn't see a suitable one there.

His father is also John Mason, but occupation is a publican.
Thanks, this is proving a bit difficult, John Jnr married in `Chapel,`   so I wonder if they were Non Com.  ???

Either he or his bride would be - hmmm .

I'll go have a look at some other sources that I've got. Will report back if I find anything.

Oh - was his father deceased on marriage cert?  Mind you, as it was so early, it's not always stated  :-\

It doesn`t say deceased for Johns father.

Mary  Challinor  the bride was definately Non Conformist. She was baptised in 1820 at   Wern Chapel, Wern , Wrexham  and the rest of her siblings also.
They married in`Independent Chapel Wrexham.`

Have you got him on the later censuses to check up on his birthplace?

There are a few around that time but not Trefeglwys/Llanidloes
