Hugh O'NEILL Irish Convict in Botany Bay
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 20:27 BST (UK) »
Hugh O'Neill was born Dungiven Co. Londonderry N. Ireland 1803. In 1825 he was sentenced to life and was deported to Botany Bay January 1825 from Co Cork, ship Hooghly (1). In 1828 NSW census has a Hugh O'Neill working in a road gang  and in 1836 he was granted permission to marry Alice Kirby in June. I think he may have been pardoned between 1838- 1841.
I have no idea where Hugh died or if he had a family with Alice Kirby. I would be very grateful for any information about Hugh and his family.

Dear Petals,
Hugh and Alice married in Cobbity, NSW in 1836

Certificate Number :V1836301 20
Groom: Hugh O'NEILL
Bride: Alice KIRBY
Place: CR (which the early Church records tell us is the Church of England Church at Cobbitty, Narellan)

I have looked for birth records for children in NSW and there doesn't appear to be any children, and there are multiple Hugh O'Neill's who died in NSW, so without his parents name, I couldn't tell if any of them were your man.

I  was able to find a pardon in 1840 listed on the NSW State Archives database under the spelling O'Neil (in fact he is listed twice)

From this site I can see HUGH O'NEIL was tried in 1824 at Tyrone.
His marital staus at the time is not noted, but he was a baker by trade.  :D

Thank you so much Sparrett and Siouxse for your most welcomed information.  I have no way of finding out Hugh's parents names unless his sentence was recorded in a Tryone newspaper at that time.
Sparrett from your information I may try Irish National Achieves in order to find out if they hold any information on the court case as it must have been something pretty awful he done to have gained a life sentence.
Thank you both again I am slowly getting there.
