death certificate query- completed
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 15:34 BST (UK) »
Have used Scotland's People in the past with no problems finding the correct death certificates but am not sure about this one and am hoping someone here will know the answer.

I knew that Robert McIlroy (born 1879) died between 1911-1928 and was a ships steward according the children's birth certificates. When searching for a death certificate 2 entries came up. One, in 191, from Marine Register of Deaths is certainly him as home address, 13 Murray St., Maryhill, Glasgow is the same address as 2 daughters in 1928. (place of death Scrabster Harbour)
However, here's my question- could the other entry also be him? if also a Robert McIlroy age 36 but district is shown as "Thurso, Caithness."

In this case, yes it is and there's a RCE on him.

I've been checking the Help section on SP but it's vague on duplicate registrations on Marine Records and Statutory ones  :-\

I've not come across a drowning being double registered before though  :-\

I also wondered why there'd be 2 entries for same person.

Just thinking that a death cert would be needed for the family and the Marine Register was needed for Marine death stats, etc.

I wonder if someone like Ibi would know. He's hot on SP records  :-\

The man died when his  boat collided with the wharf.

Thanks for all the help with this one. I now have the Marine Register entry, the Thurso death certificate and the entry from RCE. A lot of unswered questions but at least I have a date and place of death as well as the cause (even if 'drowned' is a bit vague) and the name of the ship.
