Irish ancestors move to London
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 20:25 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am totally new to Irish ancestry - have just discovered that my 3x great grandparents were Irish. They were:

John Driscoll 1833 Ireland
Ellen 1836 Possibly Cork, Ireland

They moved to the east end of London - Poplar - I would estimate in the 1850s (before May 1858) and had lots of children there. I wondered what the best way is to trace them back to Ireland or perhaps some record of them arriving in England?

I think John's mum and dad were Patrick and Ellen...

As I say any advice would be useful as i dont know anything about Irish records

Thanks
Alison

Do you have John and Ellen in any census?
Their place of birth may be mentioned.
Were they Catholic or Protestant?  I ask because Protestant marriages in Ireland were recorded from 1845.
Other BMDs were not registered until 1864 [I think!]
I am not aware of any passenger records from Ireland to England.

Have you seen the marriage for John Driscoll and Ellen Shea, June 1858, Poplar 1c 1080?
This is to be found in FreeBMD.

Ireland was part of the U.K. and records weren't (and still aren't) kept for people travelling between Ireland and England, Wales, Scotland.
Driscroll is a very common surname in Cork but found in other counties as well. If you trace John and Ellen in each possible English census record you may get a clue (1911 census seems to be quite good at giving an Irish birthplace in many cases).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
