Tracing farm names in Llanfachreth
« on: Thursday 01 October 09 12:30 BST (UK) »
I have been using farm names to help identify family members in wills, BT's etc..

Can anyone tell me the best place to find out more about the owners of the farms, who rented them and how they were typically passed down?

The two farms of interest for me are Benrhos Isaf and Bwlch Rhos wen - both in Llanfachreth.

Regards, Nigel

Most likely the farms would have been part of the Nannau(Nanney) Estate in the Parish of Llanfachreth The Estate was owned by the Vaughan's until 1858/9 then bequeathed to the Wynn's

There are two record offices that should be used in your search; Caernarfon Record Office and the Merionnydd Record Office at Dolgellau. They both have web sites.

You do not mention dates?

Rent Rolls and the Tithe Schedule are available giving the owners and tenants names.

I give some references I have used in searching for my ancestors:-
1787 Rent Rolls ref XD2/1583 at Caernarfon RO
1843 Rent Roll of Sir RW Vaughan bart ref XD/21588 at Caernarfon RO
1846 Tithe Schedule Llanfachreth at Dolgellau RO
1849 Rent Roll of the Estate of Sir Robert Williames Vaughan ref XD2/1492 at Caernarfon RO

Good luck!
