Hi Darren,

This is getting more confusing, it only says on the index Martha was living with them, I think you've been misinformed !!

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,406528.0.html

I've put a link to the thread you referred to for reference.

According to the actual census return, the Martha the index referred to was only 3 years older than William, unmarried and living next door, no relation whatsoever as far as I can see.

Will come back to this later, if someone else hasn't hopefully already sorted it out for you.

Kindest regards,

Pels.

Will post this also :

Easier to check back on later, but I think we can safely say if that was the reason you believed his mother to be called Martha, it isn't correct !!  :(

Also the index for my sanity when I check it again after work !!  :D

Thankyou Jennifer !!  :) :)

I'm not quite sure where to post this now, but while I was looking I came across the 1851, if you already have it there isn't anything lost.

1851 census:
HO107/2339, Folio 185, Page 65

Yorkshire, Sheffield
Snow Lane, 49

Elizabeth Blake, h, wid, 65, b. Yorks, Pontefract
William Nicholson, son in law, mar, 25, Table K Cutler, b. Sheffield
Jane, dau, mar, 21, b. Rotherham
Frederick, grandson, 4, b. Sheffield

Kind regards,

Pels.

Since you know when William and Jane married http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,406528.msg2748004.html#msg2748004
you could get the marriage certificate, and this would give you the name of William's father.

That would definitely be the best idea Jennifer, I've exhausted the 1841 trying to find a pattern of names that might fit in with those of William's children ??

Hopefully if the certificate is purchased, Darren would be kind enough to put us out of our misery and tell us who it was !!
