Hi Carol,

Try familysearch.org or freebmd.rootsweb.com or freecen.rootsweb.com to start with. These are free sites. Also ancestry.com has some free info. After that there are other sites. My research has been mostly UK so you may need to look at some sites I have not heard of yet.

Hope this helps,

Carol,

The 1901 census (also 1891, 1881 and now 1871) is online at the following (paying) site:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

The site has births to 1904, marriages to 1929, and deaths to 1954.

Scottish certificates include much more information that those in England & Wales.

Your first step would be to download the marriage certificate of Robert and Mary.  It should have their ages and occupations, and the names of their parents plus occupations of their fathers and maiden names of their mothers.

I venture to suggest that it is virtually impossible for someone overseas to research in Scotland without using ScotlandsPeople.

On the Home Page of the site there is a Free Surname Search.  It reveals that LOVE and DEMPSTER are common names.

As you are (at least at present) looking for relatively recent events, you are not likely to find much, if anything, in the IGI at:
http://www.familysearch.org/
Scottish records extracted from old church records and from the statutory registers (civil registration began in 1855 in Scotland) usually cut out at about 1875 in the IGI.

If you look at the post "LINKS: Sharing useful Scotland links" at the top of the general section of the RootsChat Scotland board, you will find a vast amount of useful information.  Ditto for the post there "Where to start with Scottish research".

There is also a Beginners Board on RootsChat.

Good luck,

JAP

Carol,

On the marriage Cert for Robert and Mary it lists Robert's parents as being John Love and Elizabeth Clark.  John being a Wood Turner

Mary's parents are listed as being Robert Dempster a coal miner (deceased) and Mary I think the surname is Gemmell but it's quite faint...

On the 1901 Census for Beith, I found the following:

Robert Dempster Head, aged 56 (retired Carter) Born in Ireland.

Mary Dempster Wife, aged 48 born in Beith Ayrshire

Mary Dempster Daughter aged 19 ( Cabinet Sandpaperer) born in Beith Ayrshire

William Dempster Son aged 18 ( General Labourer) Born in Beith Ayrshire

Catherine Dempster Daughter aged 15 ( Mill Worker Cabinet) Born in Beith Ayrshire

Mary Gemmell Mother in Law aged 83 widowed born in Ireland

Found the Marriage for Robert Love's parents:

John Love and Elizabeth Clark married 29 August 1870 in Stewarton in Ayr. John is listed as a Joiner and Elizabeth as a Farm Servant.

His parents are Allan Love a Hand Loom Weaver and Isabella Love nee Campbell.

Her parents are Colin Clark labourer and Catherine Clark nee McMillian

Will look for the 'Loves' in the 1901 and come back to you

Best wishes

Mo
