merjones:  Thanks for the newspaper articles!  Yes, these are all relatives to John Henry, and the Caroline Bumby you found is the daughter I'd like to find information about on UK to USA transportation logs.  She was born in the UK and died in the US (1887), but how did she get here?

Su:   These are his parents and siblings aboard the Algeria, and it certainly does appear that John Henry Bumby could be aboard the Egypt in September 1873.  He was born in 1844, so the age fits.

But I'm even more confused if it is him, because I have letters dated 8 July 1874, 6 July 1875, and 29 July 1879 showing him living in England.  His "trail" doesn't begin in Montana until around 1881 in family letters, and not until 1883 on the Madison County Taxpaper's List.

Any clue when and what ship his wife and daughter were aboard from the Uk to the USA?

Lisa in California:   Perhaps the following will give you another way to search:  He was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England in 1844.  His father, William Bumby, was born in Bradford, Yorkshire and his mother, Sarah Sutcliffe Bumby, was born in Tyersall., Yorkshire.  His father was listed as a "coal merchant" in 1861 and 1871.  In 1861, John Henry was listed as an "office clerk."

THANKS!
BUMBY in Yorkshire (Leeds, Huddersfield, etc.) and Montana, and related names:  SUTTCLIFFE, BENTLEY, MEADLEY, BARSTOW/BASTOW, MARSDEN ....

BROOK in Yorkshire (Elland area) and Montana, and  related names:  CROSSLAND, OXLEY, ARMITAGE ....

He could have gone out there the same month as his parents to find somewhere to live or see if he could get a job, then went back again so he was home in 1874.  I have traced some rellies for a friend who were back and forth from Tennesse to UK like yoyo's  :D
Perhaps Martha and Caroline didn't go out there until later.
As William and Sarah didn't sail until 1873 they should be on the 1871 UK census, unless they also went back and forth.

Just had a thought..
The reason why you cannot find John on the 1880 US census is probably because it would have been taken in September if I am correct.

Perhaps John went back and forth, or could John travelling in 1880 be another John?

The November 1880 image does show Brumby.  He apparently was American.

Looking at census returns, there were:
John H Brumby, born c1844, Vermont.  In 1920, living with wife, Mary A., in New York.
John H Brumby, born c1846, England.  In 1930, 1920, 1900 (and perhaps more) John was living with wife Electa, in Ohio.

There is a passenger list in 1886 for a John Brumby, American, born in Liverpool, England.  (Port of departure was Liverpool, arriving port was New York.)  It looks like the intended destination was New York; print too small to read.

Without using surnames, I tried searching for John or Martha (born within 2 years of their respective dates of birth) returning to the UK within 5 years of 1896.  I don't see anything close to their surnames.  (Now thinking about it, I didn't try looking for names like Burnley, like Su found.)  Perhaps their record could still be there.  ::)

This doesn't help with your current search, but in case you have not seen it, this refers to a mine, "Molly McGregor", and it mentions W.A. Bumby.
