merjones: Thanks for the newspaper articles! Yes, these are all relatives to John Henry, and the Caroline Bumby you found is the daughter I'd like to find information about on UK to USA transportation logs. She was born in the UK and died in the US (1887), but how did she get here?
Su: These are his parents and siblings aboard the Algeria, and it certainly does appear that John Henry Bumby could be aboard the Egypt in September 1873. He was born in 1844, so the age fits.
But I'm even more confused if it is him, because I have letters dated 8 July 1874, 6 July 1875, and 29 July 1879 showing him living in England. His "trail" doesn't begin in Montana until around 1881 in family letters, and not until 1883 on the Madison County Taxpaper's List.
Any clue when and what ship his wife and daughter were aboard from the Uk to the USA?
Lisa in California: Perhaps the following will give you another way to search: He was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England in 1844. His father, William Bumby, was born in Bradford, Yorkshire and his mother, Sarah Sutcliffe Bumby, was born in Tyersall., Yorkshire. His father was listed as a "coal merchant" in 1861 and 1871. In 1861, John Henry was listed as an "office clerk."
THANKS!
