Hi,

Do you know which newspaper/magazine featured the obituary?

Hello Nanny Jan

No, I don't.  I believe the details came from the record office or similar on the island.  I wondered whether it would be on Ancestry or similiar.

Hi Ewan,

I think "The Times" has some online archives but it's not something I've ever used.

Have you asked the cost of a copy from the Record Office?  If you have all the details (name/date etc.) if should be fairly straightforward for them.  They should be able to tell you if the item is available online.

Hello Nanny Jan

I think that is what I will have to do is contact the record office concerned.  I was just hoping that there may have been something online.

Many thanks for your help.

Just to let you know, I contacted the record office concerned and they said 'You have to have a researcher to be able to do this'.  So I suppose it all depends on what record office you talk to.

Hi Ewan,

How odd!   I've looked at local newspapers on microfilm at the Dorset History Centre without any problems.

I wonder if there are any Rootschatters on the Isle of Man who could get a copy for you?

there is no such place as the Record office - if you are referring to General Registry which keeps official records of Births, marriages and Deaths  ( + remember civil reg only started 1877) then they will have nothing to do with newspaper archives.

If you are referring to Manx National Heritage Library (located at Manx Museum) then they keep parish records (bapts ,burials + marriages) pre c.1900 + some indices to civil reg) - they also have all (minus a few gaps in early issues) Manx Newspapers on microfilm - freely consultable - however there is no index post 1865 - see under newspapers on http://www.manxnotebook.com - they do not have the staff to spend wading through microfilms - a slow tedious process even when indexed - hence you need pay someone to do it.
any thing with a Manx Connection
