James Scrimger 1939
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 14:29 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out any information on James Scrimger, born in 1839 in Arbroath, Scotland.
His father was called William, mother's name yet unknown.
He can be found on the 1901 English census, aged 67, living with his son, William and family living in bedlington, Northumberland. By this time is is registered as a 'naval pensioner'

Any help in tracing him prior to this census would be most appreciated!

Thanks
Sue

This may well be the person you are looking for ...:

James Scrimgeour b. 18 May 1837 chr. 25 May 1837 Arbroath to William Scrimgeour and Isabella Sim (This is an "Extracted record", so you can see the original on ScotlandsPeople, though there might not be any more information than is given here)

This James appears in the 1841 Census returns for Arbroath (Registration District 272, Enum. Dist. 5, Page 4) (Freecen transcription) ...

SCRIMGER   William   M   35   Merchant Seaman    Angus
SCRIMGER   Bell   F   30       Angus
SCRIMGER   Jean   F   10   Flax Spinner    Angus
SCRIMGER   Margaret   F   8       Angus
SCRIMGER   William   M   6       Angus
SCRIMGER   James   M   4       Angus

... however, to be certain, you will have to track back from 1901, though a quick look at the 1891, 1881, 1871 returns for England and Wales brings up only one James Scrimgeour  "1839 plus/minus 2 years" plus 'sounds like' and he was a cotton mill manager born in Bolton, Lancs., so perhaps your James was still in Scotland (or at sea) at the time of these earlier census returns and so you will have to consult these on Scotlandspeople. If you find them in these earlier returns and everything fits, you may well find that this James is indeed yours.
