"Husband" is not just the chap with a wife...

Most likely the Manager of the Shop.... 

Early 20th C dictionaries show "husbandry" as being the hands-on manager, eg Animal Husbandry - the Overseer at a farm... ; a person who has formal study qualifications in the management of studs  etc
