1861 Census Look-up please..
« on: Monday 12 October 09 20:15 BST (UK) »
Would someone be good enough to look for John Valentine in the 1861 Census?

He was born in 1825 in Germany, is listed as a commercial traveller, and was living in E London (Mile End Old Town, Shoreditch, etc.) and I suspect he would have been living with the wife he married on 8th Jan 1860 at Shoreditch St Leonards - another record I'm trying to retrieve.

Many thanks in advance.
Cheers

Thanks both for replying so quickly.

I've come across the commercial traveller before, but discounted it because on the 1871 & 1881 censuses he's shown as a tailor - this could be countered by the fact that on his son's marriage certificate he's shown as a labourer, so I guess he could have been looking for work of any kind. I kind of imagined, though, that if he was a tailor it would have been a profession rather than just a job, and if he wasn't a time-served tailor he wouldn't have been able to get a job as a tailor in the first place!

Have been checking for marriages for him, and came up with the marriage to Rosina also. He did, in fact, have a son called John, but John Jr was born in 1862.

I think I'm going to have to search for the birth of John Jr and use the parent info from the certificate - haven't had any luck with that one so far though (thought I might have been able to take a short cut :-\ !)

Many thanks

Yes I traced the one I found in 1861 and, as you say, the change to tailor seems very odd!

Birth certificate seems to be the way to go.
