Which way are you trying to trace them - forwards or backwards (or both)?

If you have the census references can you post them as it helps with searches.

hi Linda
i think they got James forename wrong, i put down john and found him on the 1891 census and traced him back to Scotland 1841 census. that death entry you found of john William heggie matches with him john and his fathers forename William. also i found this john was a gardener same as the James we were looking for. i think john might have been married a couple of times. hi linda
jane heggie had a son in 1891 out of wedlock father not sure yet. there is a birth record for him = ARTHUR HEGGIE 1891 sep qrt kingston middlesex, surrey. we all knew him as arthur but i found on ancestry.co.uk his marriage record = WILLIAM A HEGGIE - mary roberts. could it be william was added later on? if i send off for a certificate which one would be best. wayne

Hi Wayne

It depends what you're hoping to find

Normally birth certificate would give you

date and place of birth

child's given name(s) (not surname) - may just say male or female

father's name & surname

mother's name, surname and maiden surname (presumably both Heggie here)

occupation of father

name and address of informant (person who registered the birth)

date of registration

Unless the father registered the birth or was there to admit paternity, it is quite likely that the two fields above in red will be blank for an illegitimate birth

A marriage certificate will normally show

date & place of marriage

whether after banns or by license

who performed marriage

names of witnesses

for each of bride & groom

name(s) & surname

age - sometimes only shown as 'full age' ie over 21 (before 1970)

condition - bachelor, spinster, widow etc

rank or profession (ie occupation)

residence at time of marriage

father's name & surname  (will sometimes also show if he is deceased, but this is not consistent - so don't assume he was alive at the time just because he isn't shown as deceased)

rank or profession of father

Be aware that someone who was illegitimate might fabricate a 'father's name' - there doesn't seem to have been much checking that the information supplied was accurate!

Only you can decide which certificate is likely to be of most use in this particular case.  Hope it all works out   :D

hi  LINDA
just read your reply, thanks for that. just sent away for a birth certificate. i can't understand if ARTHUR  was registered as ARTHUR HEGGIE at birth why did he put WILLIAM A HEGGIE down on his marriage certificate, maybe his father was called William?
