Ellen can certainly be used as a short name for Eleanor.

I was thinking a baptism cert (rather than birth) might show her full names - just in case she was actually baptised as 'Maria Eleanor' If so might be just enough to show a positive link to one of the Galway baptisms you found.

Am I correct in saying that you have NO New Zealand paperwork saying that his mother was called Ellen Burke NOR any paperwork to say that he was from Annaghdown ?
