Divorce and Marriage in the 1940s. Completed
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 11:41 BST (UK) »
Hi

Andrew Stuart was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1911.  On 17 Sep 1938, he married Jeanie Brown Brock (b. Sydney Australia, 1911), in Edinburgh.

He joined the Royal Engineers, and travelled to Cape Town on the Dunnottar Castle on 23 Feb 1939.  Jeannie followed in November of that year.

Sometime between 1943 and 1946, they divorced in South Africa, there were no children.  Jeanie returned to Scotland, dying in 1992.

Andrew, who was a joiner by trade, married Shirley ? in South Africa.  The couple sailed from Durban to Southampton, arriving in May 1949.

Can anyone fill in any blanks?

Thank you.

Hi,

I might be wrong  ;D ;D ;D in this assumption but I thought if you married in Scotland the divorce would have to go through the Scottish Courts.    I don't think the South African courts would have the jurisdiction to dissolve a marriage that had taken place in Scotland.   What do others think?
