Cromer War Memorial
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 15:03 BST (UK) »
I am helping my brother in law with his family tree. It is believed that his uncle Andrew Campbell 1925-1943 was in the Royal Navy and that his name appears on the War Memorial at Cromer, Norfolk.

Is there anyone local to the area who could confirm the inscription and/or take a photograph for us?

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you found him on the CWGC site?  There is an Andrew Campbell there with Edinburgh connections who is commemorated on the CWGC's naval memorial at Lowestoft.

Earlier this year, I took a photograph of a memorial at Cromer:

'To the memory of the brave Royal Engineer Bomb Disposal Personnel who were killed clearing British land-mines from the Norfolk coast between 1944 and 1953...'

There is a CAMPBELL listed who may or may not be yours. If you PM your e-mail details, I can send some photos to you.

Thanks for that.

I have now looked at CWGC and found Andrew Donald Campbell of the Royal Naval Patrol Service who died 25/10/1944 aged 19.

I did not see the bit about Edinburgh but that confirms this is the right person. Can you direct me to the right page?

I will need to redirect my request to the Suffolk pages.

Ian

To see more of the CWGC record you will need to click on the red letters of his name on the left of the entry.  That will take you to a new page at the bottom of which are further red words which will take you to a photograph of the memorial.  If you want a photo of the actual panel on which he is named the CWGC have cooperated with a photographic project which provides such a service in return for a donation.  Details are provided on the CWGC site.

Dear IMBER,

Thanks again for your help. I have now found the additional information which confirms the family connection and the photo of the Lowestoft Naval Memorial. It looks like an impressive monument.

Dear Lyn S,

Thanks for your contribution but it is now clear it is Lowestoft and not Cromer.
