Help with Williamson Family
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 08:18 BST (UK) »
Looking for Rachel Williamson's birth and anything to do with her parents.
I have her marriage to John French in Duffus in 1871. Father John he was a horse dealer died before 1871. Mother Isabella Mc Intyre also died before 1871.
Also have Rachel's death in 1929 in Drainie father the same mother Jane _ _ _ _ _.
1881 census says she was born in Inverness-shire 1891 Grantown 1901 Elgin.
Hope somebody can help.
Anne.

Looking for Rachel Williamson's birth and anything to do with her parents.
1881 census says she was born in Inverness-shire 1891 Grantown 1901 Elgin.

Grantown-on-Spey is in the combined parish of Cromdale, Inverallan and Advie. Most of it belonged historically to the county of Moray, but some parts belonged to the county of Inverness. In 1891 some of the untidy county boundaries were rationalised, so that after that the whole of the combined parishes was in the county of Moray. Moray was also known as the County of Elgin/Elginshire.

So these apparently contradictory birthplaces are actually perfectly possible.

However .... the 1881 census actually gives her place of birth as Duthil, which is the next parish to Cromdale Inverallan and Advie. So the chances are that she was born somewhere west of Grantown and close to the county and parish boundary.

I can't find her on FreeCen in 1851. Since the parish of Cromdale has been transcribed and the parish of Duthil has not, she is probably in Duthil. You could search for her at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
