Hi

If he was born 1820 he will have married after 1837 so do you have a copy of his marriage cert showing his fathers name and occupation

 Hi Carole
I haven't as yet. I have tried but assuming he married where his wife Sarah lived (London MX) I looked at years 1840-44 - when his first child was born there are seven William Carters in various areas .Not sure which one to choose ! You're right it would be a good start.  Off to Anc to see if I can find anything there
Many thanks
Brenda

Hi

One other way - but it means spending another £7 - is to get a copy of one of the childrens birth certs to get his wife's maiden name

Hi Brenda,
They are easy to find in 1881 Census where son Charles age 21 is still at home
Are the children on 1861 census;
William, 1843
Robert, 1845
John, 1848
Henry, 1855
Charles, 1860
RG9/1724/20/6

If so there is large gap in childrens ages.
Could Sarah be a second wife?

Do you have them in 1851 census?

Trish :)

Thanks all
I have found on ANC  a possible marriage to a Sarah Chumbley in 1836 in London but that would mean he was only 16 !  Does this seem viable? Unfortunately it doesn't give a Vol or Page no so I can't order a cert. Still can't find a birth record- frustrating !
He was still with Sarah in 1881 so I don't think he was married twice- could be wrong though!  Heads spinning now !!

Hi

There were no marriage certs prior to 1.7.1837 - parish registers only.

Unfortunately - fathers names were not shown on marriage entries before 1.7.1837

I'd forgotton about the pre 1837 marriage certs . I saw the original parish reg copy but as you say - no fathers name. I did have them on the 1851 census but didn't save it & I can't find them now ! Looks like a bit of a brick wall at the mo. Do you think the Bristol records office could help?

Hi Brenda,

I sincerely doubt you have found the correct marriage - much too early.

This looks like them in 1851,

HO107/1951 Folio 391 Page 9

but there are certainly discrepancies. 1851 Sarah is born in London, 1861 Bristol. 1851 William is a Cordwainer, 1861 a Masons Lab - big diff there yet they are in the same parish St Augustine the Less. I think Sarah probably was born London - that is what she says in 1871 also - William a Lab

As has already been suggested your best bet is a birth cert

Not seeing anything on FreeBMD for the two eldest but here is

John Samuel Bristol Dec 1847 11 122
Mary Ann Jun 1850 11 145

Look pretty good

Cheers Kris  :)
