We (Inverness Courier) regret to announce that, about midday on Monday last, the fine farm-house of Piperhill, parish of Cawdor, was totally consumed by fire. As soon as it was established, a message was sent to the Established and Free Church congregations, the greater part of whom immediately repaired to the spot, but although every effort was put forth to extinguish the flames, it was found impossible to save the house. The large assemblage then directed their attention to saving the furniture which, we are glad to say, was affected, not, however, without much being injured in the removal. Among those who rendered valuable help by their assistance and advice were Mr Stables, Cawdor Castle; Mr Rose, Heathmount; Mr Maclennan, Miekle Urchany; Mr McPherson, Torich; Mr Campbell Smith, Raitlane; Mr William Clark, Urchany; Mr Joss, Budgate; Mr Black, Cawdor; Mr Rose, Mitton; Mr Morrison, Allaincha &et Much sympathy is felt for Mrs Mill and family who were thus rendered homeless in the short space of an hour, and the neighbours vied with each other in affording them every help in their power. Mrs Mill and an invalid daughter were conveyed by Mr Rose, Heathymount, to Miekle Urchany where they are presently enjoying the company of Mr McPherson and it is hoped that immediate steps will be taken to erect another dwelling. We learn that the furniture is partially insured. The fire had its origin in the coal cellar where it is believed one of the servant girls threw some ashes which set fire to the coals.
