Criminal Registers - West Yorkshire
« on: Friday 23 October 09 09:48 BST (UK) »
On Ancestry i have found the criminal register for John BECKETT born abt 1797.  The trial date is given as 2 April 1838 and he was acquitted.

Could someone with the full access to Ancestry please give me the details of the two images that are there please.

My John Beckett was born in 1796 in Steeple Claydon, Buckinghamshire and i just want to rule out this one as being mine.  I dont think it's him but never say never until you have proof :)

Hi Fitty,

These Criminal Registers show very little information - hardly any more than you have already - just one line showing name, age, crime and result.

A bit more information is in the Northern Star & Leeds General Advertiser of April 7 1838 -

"Discharged - John Beckett, 41, charged with having been indicted for a felony at Doncaster Sessions January 1838, to which indictment he has not yet appeared or pleaded."

I really can't see this being him,  Him and his family were Ag Labs from a tiny village in Buckinghamshire, why would they drag him up to Yorkshire and not have the court session in Buckinghamshire?

I thought it might have given place or place or something.  I think i'm just going to discount this.

Thanks for that Yorklass.

I agree Fitty.
Not likely to be your John Beckett.  I had a quick look at John Beckett's of the right age in 1841, and there were a few living in and around Doncaster, so they were more likely to be the culprits.

I had a look at the previous West Riding sessions newspaper report in January 1838, but they didn't name any of the prisoners.
