1901 Census Help Pls
« on: Friday 23 October 09 22:25 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I am hoping someone can please help me. I have been hunting high and low for my Gr-Gr Grandparents on the 1901 Census and cannot find them anywhere.

They are John Seenan (b1883 Glasgow) and Janet Summers (b1884 Glasgow). They got married on 29/4/1901 in Dundee so their is a chance they were there at the census. Both lived at 4 John St, St Mary's, Dundee.

I have found both sets of Gr-Gr-Gr Grandparents still in Glasgow, but neither John or Janet are with them. I can't find them individually or together and it is frustrating the living daylights out of me.

Is there a way I can search for 4 John St to see who is there? The story is that they ran away together so I'm wondering if they've somehow avoided the census, but it's probably more that I'm mssing something very obvious.

Thank you so much
Julz x

Hi

Just for starters - the 1901 census was taken on 31st March so if they only married on 29th April - you are looking for them separately

Hi Carole

I've looked for them seperately...and together, and with their parents, with their grandparents - I'm either missing something or they're not there.

I'm just wondering if there's a way to look at the address because they could have been there already as I'm told they ran away together, but no-one is sure when.

Thanks
Julz

Hi

It looks like 4 John St, Dundee was a block of tenements or something similar as an address search on Ancestry brings up 97 people.  Neither John nor Janet are amongst them.

There is though a Mary Ann Summers age 18, born Dundee, boarding in one of the tenements.

Andy

Hi

I'm having no luck finding them in 1901 either.  I don't use Scotland's People so I don't know whether you can search the 1901 by address (pay per view)

It's quite possible that 4 John St was a "convenience" address used solely to establish residence to allow them to marry in Dundee - but they may not necessarily have been living there

Hi

Andy's find looks interesting  :)  Nothing anything like John Seenan though  :-\

Julz - who were the witnesses on the marriage cert? it might give some clues.

It's all very mysterious. The Mary Ann Summers is interesting as it's the right age for Janet and interestingly Mary Ann was John's Mums name.

The witnesses were Robert Ogilvie, Jane Clark, Robert H, N or A Logan and Mary Lavory. They were married at 4 John St by Robert N Logan of the U.F Church.

Think Mary Ann was Janet as she is lodging with a Jane Clark who had a daughter Jane (aged 21) on the 1901 and she's down as a Jute preparer   :D

That is most likely her then as she is a Jute Preparer on the Marriage Cert.

I wonder why she changed her name, probably just to hide. Goodness only knows what John is down as!!
