1861 and 1871 Census Lookup, New Brunswick
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 00:38 BST (UK) »
Hi,

On January 10, 1858 Alexander Martin married Marie Jenkins. I believe Alexander and Marie were both residents of Point Escuminac. The marrige is in the St. Louis des Francais, Kent County, Parish Register.

In 1861 and 1871 they may have been living in Northumberland County or in Kent County.

1881 Canada Census district # 35 Northumberland Parish of Hardwicke
Alexander Martin 60
Mary 54
Annie 22
Mitchel 20
Julia 18
William 15
Nancie Martin  81

I am not sure that this is my family. I am requesting an 1861 and an 1871 census lookup.

Thanks,

Hello,

The 1881 census has Alexander as Irish and his wife Marie as English. Marie's father William Jenkins was born in England. Is the Nancie Martin who is living with Alexander's family in 1881  in the 1871 census? She is likely Alexander's mother. I do not yet know the name of his father.
I have not found Alexander and Mary nor their children in the 1891 census. It could be that Mary died between 1881 and 1891.

Thank You,

A possibility for Alexander in the 1891 census.  Ancestry has his wife's name as Fubu - it certainly doesn't look like Mary.

You can search the 1891 census from this site

Did the marriage of Marie not have the details for Alexander's parents?

If you input Martin, Alexandre (last 2 letters reversed) you will find Alexander Martin with wife Pheobe (Fubu from 1891) and son Charles.  Same area, same name but is it the man you're looking for??  Did his first wife die between 1881 and 1891?  Son Charles has a birth year of 1883 - possible cause of death for a first wife.

The 1861 census image for A Martin (39), RC, Native (apparently this means Native to New Brunswick) is very indistinct and hard to read.  He is with a wife (25) and sons Joseph (3) and David(?).  The area is Hardwick Northumberland.

Hello Debbie,

No, the image of the church record I have for their marriage does not name the parents of Alexander Martin nor of Marie Jenkins. The image I have is from the Drouin Collection. Earlier research identified Marie's parents.

I don't think that the Alexander and Ann in the 1861 census of Hardwicke are mine. Daughter Ann and possibly son Mitchel would have been included.

Earlier today I found Alexander, age 70, and Fubu, age 47, in the 1891 census.

I think Marie must have died between 1881 and 1891, likely about 1883 if Charles is her son.

I have found no trace of their other children after 1881 in New Brunswick. I have a possibility for Mitchel. The familysearch.org site has a Mitchel Martin, born July 1861 in Canada in the 1900 U S census. He is living in Wilbraham, Hampden, Massachusetts. Wife Mary, daughter Mary, and son Wilfred.

Thank you so much for your time and effort.

The 1900 US census for Mitchell Martin has a page 2 with the addition of Alfred b. April 1886,
Phillip b. Feb 1890 - these two in Canada and the following 3 in Massachussetts.
Minnie March 1892, Joseph July 1894, Albert Aug 1896.  Marriage year for the couple was 1879 (21 years married) and immigration year 1891 although there is a correction added showing 1897 but that doesn't agree with the births of the children.  Thy are all emplyed in a jute mill.

Hi,

I think the immigration year would be more like 1891 since he is not in the 1891  census of New Brunswick.  He was quite young when he married. I wonder if he was naturalized. Perhaps brother William travelled with him to the US.

The Charles Martin found living with Alexander and Pheobe in 1901 is, I think, a grandson. I found a birth for a Charles Martin on the PANB Vital Statistics site.
 1882/01/14
Mother   Julie Martin
Father  Not Named

Thanks Again
