Gauls of Knocksquire
« on: Monday 26 October 09 00:55 GMT (UK) »
One of my ancestors, who was married to my grandfather was Margaret Gaul, she was born in 1868 in knocksquire/knockscur her mum and dad were james gaul and margaret quirke, I have seen a little info on all these in the line of censii and birth records etc.
If this means anything to you, i'd love to hear from you, and maybe we can share some info.
all the best
pete

Hi
My family are from Knocksquire and are related to Gauls.  Not sure if it's the same family as you mentioned. A Mary Stapleton born in 1899 married a James Gaul. From the census of 1911 a Margaret Gaul was living in Knocksquire aged 78. Let me know is this helps your search.  I can give you more info if it's the same Gauls.

Hi there
Thanks for the reply, the Margaret gaul who is mentioned in the 1911 census would be my step grandmothers mother, her maiden name was Quirke, and she is buried in Rathanna cemetery with her husband james, who died earlier. As for the James gaul that married mary stapleton, I don't recall him, though there is a james gaul, who lived in Borris, not too far away. Would this be a son of Margaret Quirke and James Gaul?
I'd love to hear from you, and I know that we can share info, you can either do it through here or i will pm you my email.
All the best
Pete

hi Peter..long time no see!...you got any further info on Currans?
Re Gauls....as well as the Curran side,I am tracing my husbands' Aughney line.
I have yet to prove that she is one of "ours",(I googled Bagenalstown baptisms.Carlow.,and came up with quite a lot of Currans and Aughneys),but I found a baptism for a MARY GAUL on 11th Aug.1844.,father PHILIP GAUL.,mother BRIDGET AUGHNEY...sponsors names were illegible, but was in Agha(where,if I'm not mistaken,Newtown is)

Also found(some text missing)
Bapism.?Jul.1848.? GAUL.father,PHILIP GAUL.,mother BRIDGET AUGHNEY.,sponsors 1.?..2.ELIZABETH KEHOE.was in Kildrina(which, incidentally,is where Joe Curran lives(he's the 90 year old man,who you intend going to see when you in Carlow)...maybe he would know something about the Gauls as well.

Hi Elaine,
Nice to see you again, I come and go with this genealogy thing, but was just trawling over my old emails and found this link, and here you are!
Yes, the Gauls, They are from what i know originally all from France via the south east of Ireland, mainly county Wexford, though a few found their way into County Carpow.
Your person, i mught be able to enlighten you, but only ever so slightly, I would put money on it, that the father, Phillip was from a place called Ballymurphy, I have many Gauls on my genealogy list as my grandfather, before he was married to my grandmother had a first wife and children with her(my uncles and aunts). Her father was a James Gaul from eastern Carlow, James had a son called phillip in 1871, I'd say he named him that after his own father as phillip was his eldest son. james himself was a late starter with the kids, and was in fact born in 1815, so the Phillip on your query could very possibly be James brother? I have no record of a phillip in the early 1800's but the records for Borris which is their parish, don't go back that far.
So now we are related on two fronts! LOL! How very rural Irish!
So just in summary, the Phillip Gaul, who was the father of your Mary Gaul and married to Bridget Aughney was probably my step grandmothers uncle. I can give you a rundown on the gauls if you want, i can send you a word file to your email, though i could post it here too.
hope all is well with you, and talk soon.
