I would be very grateful to hear of any information regarding Elizabeth Scott who was born in Alloa about 1843 and subsequently emigrated to New Zealand about 1865.

Hi Kevs

Do you have anything else that might help in finding more info on Elizabeth? Marriage details or death entry in NZ for example. There is this entry in 1851 as a possibility - children born in Alloa:

William Scott 40, Corler (?spl) b. Tulliallan, Perth
Jean Scott 13
John Scott 12
Elizabeth Scott 7

Address: Drysdale St Smith Close, Alloa, Clackmannanshire

Hi Monica,

Thanks for your reply and information.   :D

I know her marriage details and have recently obtained her death certificate from New Zealand.

She married Daniel Rossiter Rudduck (my Gt Gt Gt Uncle) in Oamaru, New Zealand on 31 Dec 1867.

She died in Dunedin, New Zealand on 9 Nov 1932 aged 92.

On her death certificate her father is listed as "William Scott" but her mother is just "- Scott" so this may indeed be a match to the family you found in 1851 as I see that there is no mother listed there either.  Is William Scott listed as a widower?

I also have the NZ birth certificate for one of her children which is how I know she came from Alloa.  On this she is listed as age 34 in 1878 which would make her born in 1843/1844 (consistent with your information).  Later, on her huband's death certificate she is listed as age 75 in 1915 making her born in 1840, consistent with her own death certificate.  However, I am assuming that the earlier information is more correct.

Kevin.

Hi Kevin

This is possibly the same family in 1841 with mother in the household:

William Scott 30
Janet Scott 25
William Scott 9
James Scott 9
Jean Scott 6
John Scott 2
Cathrine Scott 6 Months

Address: Cullers Close, Alloa

Ages are a bit out for Jean and John compared to the possible 1851 entry. Ages for everyone over 15 yrs old are supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years, although this still leaves father William's age slightly out as well.

Regarding potential father William's occupation in 1851, I am looking at a transcript of the census that doesn't include the marital status, you would have to look at the original image on Scotlands People, the pay to view site, to confirm this.

Did Janet and husband Daniel use of any of the names you are seeing in the names of their children?

Looking at 1851, there is also this entry which I wondered whether it could be mother Janet and some of the children visiting her sister (with the Catherine who shows from the 1841 entry) - all born in Alloa:

Mary Thom 45, Drawers Maker
Janet Scott 39, sister
Lillias Welch 30, sister
Cathrine Scott 10, niece
Janet Scott 5, niece
George Scott 2, nephew

Address: Back O Dykes, Alloa

Again, the original image would let you confirm whether Janet above showed as married/widowed etc.

I think Janet's maiden name may have been Welch. There is this likely entry on IGI for the son John:

JOHN SCOTT  Birth: 14 OCT 1839 Alloa - father William and mother Janet Welch

The Welch name fits with that 1851 possible entry for Janet with sisters and one called Lillias Welch. There is then this entry in 1861 which looks like John staying with aunt Lily Welch:

Lilly Wilch 44, dressmaker b . Alloa
John Scott 21, nephew, candlemaker b. Alloa
Margaret Paterson 8, niece b. Alloa

Address: Candle Street, Alloa

Hi Monica,

One of the names from your last reply struck me - Lilias is the name of their 7th child for which I have the NZ birth certificate.  I don't know how common a name Lilias is in Scotland?

There is also a good match with their other children.

The full list of their children is: James, Mary?, Jessie, George, Mary, Jean, Lilias, William, Charles.

So, Jessie could be named after her mother (Janet), William after her father, Mary and Lilias after her aunts and James, George and Jean after her siblings?

George and William were also the names of Daniel's brothers.

Kevin.

I can't see a death for mother Janet post 1855 and the start of official registration under the names of Scott/Welch. Not sure if she may have died before this date.

Also can't see Elizabeth in 1861 in the census. Possible entry for a Catherine (in fact there are two b. 1840/1 in Alloa) working as servants and then the entry for John with Lilias Welch.

Could Elizabeth have left for NZ with some of her family? Have you been able to find her arrival in NZ?

I'm afraid I have no information on Elizabeth and her family in New Zealand apart from her marriage to Daniel Rossiter Rudduck on 31 Dec 1867 in Oamaru.

On her death certificate in 1932 it states that she has been living in New Zealand for 67 years making her arrival in New Zealand about 1865.
