Ayres/Donovan marriage.
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 13:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I would like to know if anyone could shed some light on my great auntie Doris Louisa Ayres marriage, she married a chap by the name of Richard 'Dickie' Donovan in Luton Bedfordshire in March 1931.
I don't know if he came from a gypsy family as i can't seem to find any info on him.

Married in Luton. Doesn't mean he was from there ..... Have ye considered he may have been from over the water? Maybe that's where his details are  :)

Hi Steve
I don't think he was from Luton, in fact i'm not sure that he even came from Bedfordshire at all, he may have come from acsoss the water but if my memory serves me right from previous research into gypsy names, the first accounts of the Donovan name being used by gypsy's was in Bath.
I seem to think that after their marriage they went to live in Wales.

Ding! Bath ....? That's right! Wasn't it our Vince Smith who came up with the goods around this issue, not so long ago? I seem to remember he explained the circuit route over to Bath. May even have been to do with Donovan's too?

Either way, I'm pretty certain he's touched on both before now. Perhaps he'll drop by and have something for ye  :)

Interestingly, I keep getting a vibe out of Bath too. And I've never quite got past a similar buzz about Eire being back in there somewhere too. This is why I watch such matters so closely  ;)

I couldn't tell you if Vince Smith researched the Donovan name, but what i can tell you is that i have researched my direct descendants which include amongst others, the Loveridges, Smiths, Jeffs, Ayres and Parkers which covers Northamptonshire all the way down to the southern tip of Hampshire and everything to the east & west.

It looks like they might have  travelled between Luton and Swansea if Maureen Eleanor and James are their children.
Freebmd has those births listed for those places and I can't see any other marriages of Ayres and Donovan after 1900.

Hi, very late to this post but I am a descendant of Richard Donovan and Doris Ayres, Richards parents were Richard and Catherine Donovan, They were both born in Swansea to John and Mary Anne. It’s was John and Mary Anne’s parent who came from Ireland to Swansea maybe late 1800s? Richard and Doris had many children, I’m not sure how many all I know about are Clifford Jack Colin Lawrence and Mary :)
