BELFAST McDEVITT PRIOR TO 1850
« on: Friday 30 October 09 01:38 GMT (UK) »
Although it's been many years of searching, I'm still hopeful of finding the family of my "black sheep" Joseph Francis McDEVITT. According to his marriage cert. in Australia he was the son of John McDevitt (a farmer) and Mary Rogers(Rodgers?) and born in Belfast, Ireland circa 1849 (if age given on cert. correct). He married in a Catholic church but there is a family story that he may have been baptised prior to the marriage and was possibly protestant before the marriage. Another family story was that he was a "remittance man", ie.  paid to stay away from the family!I do know the family used the name De vere/Dever in the early 1900s and then reverted to McDevitt after his death in 1915.
Any information gratefully welcomed.
