Hi MyHistory

A friend of mine who has some of the old Ripley in Pictures Books has had a search through and Kemp's Bakery is mentioned.  It says 'There has been a bakery in Oxford Street for close on one hundred years. Starting as 'Kemp's' around the turn of the century.  It was run by the Moss Brothers from the 1940s to 1980s'  There is an advert for Moss bakery dating to 1949' The advert says the bakery is at no 47 Oxford Street.

The book is now a few years old, so we are talking more than one hundred years now and it seems the writer was not aware that the Kemp bakery was certainly there in 1881.

There is a photo of the Moss bakery in 1984 about that time it changed hands, and at the time of writing the book was being run by Mr & Mrs Bell, who changed the shop frontage but retained the name 'Moss'.

It also mentions a Midlands Wrestling Champion called Percy Illsley who was born in 1893.  Percy started work as a baker at Kemp's bakery.

I wonder if the Kemp's had a bakery at no 5 and also at no 47, or maybe the numbers were changed?

Will send you a Personal Message (PM)

Hi there again

Just thinking
If the Kemp's had a bakery in Oxford Street from 1881 (at least) right up to 1940, then surely their adverts would appear in The Ripley & Heanor News Archives which are held in Ripley Library on fiche.  The newspaper archives go back to around 1901 I believe.
